Chris Rosebrough has done another review on Brian Houston. We’ve even played this sermon to a few people and people have difficulty understanding what Brian Houston is talking about.

Part of me is torn. Do i slam this guys sermons or do i pity him. Part of me wants to love him as a Christian brother, the other part of me wants to Call him for what he appears to be… an Eisegete, A Prosperity Gospel Preacher who has forgotten what it is he is meant to do. My heart breaks as this man is one of the leading men in my own denomination. I truly am Heartbroken.
G’day Chris. Welcome here…
OK well without giving you my life story, am/have been in a situation you’re kind of looking at. I am unlearning, and re-learning everything I have learned and heard come off pulpits over the last 20+ years. In my early days it was AOG. More recently it was c3. No surprise I am critically questioning and Biblically critiquing much of the c3 doctrine, the prosperity theology etc. I have had some life experiences that seem to severly dent the doctrine.
I would encourage you not to be scared, not to think that you are being unreasonably critical, that you’re slamming the leaders or preachers. There are those here and on c3CW that do have a go at the leaders in more of a personal way (I have occasionally). You will know (ie the Spirit’s conviction) if you’re going too far. But I am much more concerned about re-learning what I’ve been taught. Remember the Bereans? They studied the Scriptures to see if what Paul said was true. If they did it to the Apostle Paul, how much more should we do it now!
I don’t always agree with everything posted here; I still hold true to my semi-Pentecostal upbringing, despite some elements of it being critically reviewed or scorched. I do believe in God’s provision, that you receive when you give to God, but nowhere like it was taught/guilt tripped to me. But again, I encourage you – read the Bible, read commentaries on it, and compare it to what you’ve been taught. I still find it hard to move some of the things I was taught because they are so convincing yet not necessarily in context. i.e. the 30/60/100 fold thing – it was talking about salvation. It wasn’t talking about giving and getting that much back.
As you said re your heart being broken; I have been close to some well-known pastors. Then to see what they preach, how they run churches, how they treat people etc – it really gets me down. Then I wonder about guys like Kong Hee or Phil Pringle – did they start out with the best intentions, then money starts taking over?
So my suggestions – Firstly – Proverbs 3:30 says not to accuse a man falsely, when he’s done you no harm. Hence I pick my (theological) fights carefully. I won’t be productively critical without reason, and again, I’m careful when it’s a personal thing. Secondly, if you know something you’ve been taught doesn’t seem right, or if you read a different interpretation, check it out. Thirdly – depending on what you were taught, I’d recommend you investigate what the Bible says about tithing (NOT giving, but tithing). For me personally this was one of the first things that (literally) lifted a weight off my back, but each to their own interpretation.
@ Chris – you might find this article enlightening, in light of Brian Houston’s ongoing fellowship with Rick Warren……

Berean & Chris – ok that episode was particularly disturbing…
1) re Patricia King – as I said I believe in BIBLICAL examples of God’s provision – not people who write books with “financial keys”. I totally agree with the example he gave that Christians are like, “oh, I’m poor – I need more money! Oh maybe Phil Pringle’s book will help me!!” Didn’t help me.
2) the Furtick matter is VERY dangerous. As Chris said, it is verging on cultish. When the leader becomes greater than Christ, it is. Refer Kong Hee and the “The Greatest Place” song. I encourage you to find the video and decide whether they’re worshipping Kong or Jesus.
@Berean, Thank you. I am currently questioning many things which i have been “taught” if i can even call it that.
