BRIAN HOUSTON PROTESTING TOO MUCH

Althought we have exposed him on this issue, Brian Houston has been emphatically trying to convince people that Hillsong Church has not changed its position on same sex issues. He tweeted,

There has been absolutely no change to Hillsong Church’s stance on homosexuality and gay marriage. Statement pending.

Source: Brian Houston, Twitter, https://twitter.com/BrianCHouston/status/628482424591118336, Published 1:27 AM – 4 Aug 2015. (Accessed 06/08/2015.) (Archived.)

In that statement he said,

“Hillsong’s position on homosexuality and gay marriage has not changed and is consistent with Scripture.”

This article will prove through the writing of Ben Gresham (a close gay friend of Brian Houston) that Houston is still following through with his promises to Ben Gresham after his meeting with him back in 2010 to bring changes to Hillsong.

In other words, Brian Houston has been caught lying… again.

hillsong lgbtqi gay homosexualALONG CAME A GRESHAM

Later, Brian Houston tweeted his blog article on Hillsong’s stance towards homosexuality (an article we will review). Ben Gresham and Houston exchanged the following:

Do I love gay people? My thoughts and my heart toward gay people and Hillsong Church. LTL blog: http://bit.ly/1VZ8yUK

@BrianCHouston not an easy subject to write about. Thanks for being clear and upfront so gay ppl know where you stand. So important.

proof_Twitter-GreshamAndHoustonOverStatement_06-08-2015Ben Gresham decided to write an article about Brian Houston and Hillsong’s latest stance on same sex issues:

Check out my latest blog about recent Hillsong statement on gay people – http://bennygresham.blogspot.com.au/2015/08/gay-people-and-hillsong-church-at.html … #gaychristian #hillsong #gay #clarity

Although Houston protested that “There has been absolutely no change to Hillsong Church’s stance on homosexuality,” Ben Gresham praised Brian Houston and Hillsong for bringing change towards embracing same sex people and same sex issues. In other words, Ben Gresham accidentally exposed Brian Houston of lying once again to the general public in his media statement.

Ben Gresham

Ben Gresham – Met with Brian Houston in 2010 to discuss what changes Hillsong can make over same sex issues.

Remember that Ben thanked Houston for “being clear and upfront” and how Houston thanked him for it, saying, “This means so much to me?” Ben decided to point out the positive changes and developments he saw in his journey and discussion with Hillsong’s Brian Houston in this below article.

Although we have pointed to these changes ourselves, it is good to have Gresham reveal the changes he has seen behind the Hillsong machine in regards to how it has slowly changed it’s stance on same sex issues.

We willhighlight the lines where Gresham exposes how Hillsong CHANGED their stance on same sex issues.

Gresham notes that Hillsong has changed, saying:

  • Hillsong has taken some steps forward in the past few years.
  • The church is now talking about the issue more
  • they no longer support or refer gay people to harmful ‘ex-gay’ or reparative/conversion programs and therapies.
  • the church will allow gay and lesbian people to attend and you won’t be kicked out for having a partner […]

He concludes,

“This is a step forward, no matter how you look at it!”

And he is right. No matter how you look at it, Brian Houston is STILL not calling homosexuality a sin and he is still not using the bible as the ultimate authority.

Gresham writes,

Gay people and Hillsong Church? At last… some clarity

Early this morning, Brian Houston, the Senior Pastor of Hillsong Church, issued a statement in response to the controversy surrounding reports that Hillsong NYC had an engaged gay couple leading the church choir. Many people on both sides of the fence (right-wing Christians and left-leaning LGBTs) quickly spread the word that “Hillsong was now gay-affirming” without really checking the facts or asking anybody in senior leadership at Hillsong church what their position really was.

Hillsong’s position on homosexuality has been rather murky and misunderstood by many. Pastor Brian Houston and the church have done a better job in recent years communicating with the public, however, they have often been wary of discussing their stance on homosexuality, marriage equality and gay people in leadership.

In an effort to clear up the matter once and for all, Pastor Brian Houston issued this statement today – “Do I Love Gay People”. This statement answers the questions that many of us have been asking for some time. I have quoted parts of the statement from Pastor Brian Houston below some key observations.

Hillsong still views homosexuality as a lifestyle choice:

“Hillsong Church welcomes ALL people but does not affirm all lifestyles. Put clearly, we do not affirm a gay lifestyle and because of this we do not knowingly have actively gay people in positions of leadership, either paid or unpaid. I recognise this one statement alone is upsetting to people on both sides of this discussion, which points to the complexity of the issue for churches all over the world”.

Hillsong reaffirms its position against same-sex marriage:

“I also live by my own convictions, and hold to traditional Christian thought on gay lifestyles and gay marriage. I do believe God’s word is clear that marriage is between a man and a woman. The writings of the apostle Paul in scripture on the subject of homosexuality are also clear, as I have mentioned in previous public statements”.

Gay people can attend Hillsong but not be part of leadership roles:

“So if you are gay, are you welcome at Hillsong Church? Of course! You are welcome to attend, worship with us, and participate as a congregation member with the assurance that you are personally included and accepted within our community. But (this is where it gets vexing), can you take an active leadership role? No”.

My thoughts:

I understand that this statement can be upsetting for many people, particularly if you are gay or lesbian and part of Hillsong Church. I know that there are many of you hoping that the church will move forward on this issue and one day welcome you to participate fully in the life of the church. Although I am upset too, it’s important to remember that Hillsong has taken some steps forward in the past few years. The church is now talking about the issue more and they no longer support or refer gay people to harmful ‘ex-gay’ or reparative/conversion programs and therapies.

This statement includes a really important note from Pastor Brian confirming that the church will allow gay and lesbian people to attend and you won’t be kicked out for having a partner – “So if you are gay, are you welcome at Hillsong Church? Of course!”. This is a step forward, no matter how you look at it!

If you are looking for an affirming church, then sadly Hillsong isn’t the place for you but thankfully there are a growing number of welcoming churches who fully support and include LGBTI people and recognise that being gay is not a choice, nor is it a sin. There are also a growing number of support and social groups like freedom2b in Australia and the Gay Christian Network in the United States that can connect you with other people like you and support you on your journey.

Keeping the conversation going:

It can be easy to dismiss this recent statement from Pastor Brian and Hillsong and label the church as homophobic, but I think that does a disservice to other LGBT people in the church and to those in leadership who are trying to handle this the best way that they know how to. It’s important to acknowledge small steps and to encourage leadership to keep moving forward. We owe it to the many gay and lesbian people who call Hillsong church home and to the many church members who have a gay son, lesbian sister, transgender daughter, etc. The conversation must continue and it must always be full of grace, on both sides.

After reading the statement this morning, I took the time to send a quick tweet to Pastor Brian just to thank him for his clarity and to keep the conversation going. We may not agree 100% but I won’t let our disagreements get in the way of a friendship or an important conversation.

Have a great week. Lots of love!
Ben

Why is Brian Houston SO hellbent to reject the “writings of Paul [which] are clear on this subject” on homosexuality and instead follow the journey and discussion with a young man that cares only about his hormones? (Hormones can’t save you.)

You have to wonder what Brian Houston will be teaching people at Bill Hybel’s Leadership Summit.

How to leave your bible in a coffee shop? How to exchange the bible for an opinion?

This is the second review out of two statements.

Sledgesong Brian Houston

Sledging media, sledging Christians, sledging churches, sledging pastors & anyone who questions him for decades.

The link below will take you to Brian Houston’s latest media statement explaining why Brian Houston dropped Mark Driscoll from speaking at Hillsong Conference 2015 (Published 07/06/2015).

Houston bends knee to critics and media (Part 3): Driscollified to speak at Hillsong

To understand the context of the things we say in this statement, please read our previous article on Houston’s previous statement over Driscoll:

Reviewing Houston’s first statement on Driscoll: Did Driscoll mislead Brian Houston?

In Brian Houston’s response as to why he cancelled Mark Driscoll speaking at the Hillsong Conference, he revealed some vague, unsettling things both by what he said and by what he left unsaid. In this review we:

1. Ask the question if Mark Driscoll is coming to speak at Hillsong Church (not Hillsong Conference) considering, Mark “will be able to speak in person in the coming weeks to discuss some of the issues that have been raised”.
2.
Expose Brian Houston publicly lying about the information on the petition and those who signed it.
3.
Expose Brian Houston lying in his attempt to “claim ignorance”.
4. Expose Brian Houston contradicting himself in his previous statement over his motives for inviting Driscoll to speak.
5. Expose Houston’s ability to paint Driscoll and himself as if they are beyond reproach while depicting Christians as hyper-sensitive, Pharisaical, unforgiving idiots.
6. Expose Houston trying to look as though he is not bending the knee to critics, when in fact he is.
7. Exposing Houston for not being pastoral, even to Mark Driscoll:

“I solemnly charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by His appearing and His kingdom: preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with great patience and instruction.” 2 Timothy 4:1-2

REVIEW OF HOUSTON’S SECOND STATEMENT RE: MARK DRISCOLL

After personal interaction with Mark Driscoll today, we have agreed that he will no longer be coming to Australia or the UK to attend Hillsong Conference.

Did Mark Driscoll confess his wrongdoings to you? Is that why you cancelled him speaking at the Hillsong Conference Brian? Are you going to call him to repent of his sins because that’s what pastors are Biblically called to do?

It is my hope that Mark and I will be able to speak in person in the coming weeks to discuss some of the issues that have been raised, […]

It’s interesting to note that Brian Houston deliberately wrote that he STILL wants to speak with Mark Driscoll “IN PERSON in the coming weeks to discuss some of the issues that have been raised.” How long is “in the coming weeks?” Does this mean Mark Driscoll is STILL going to fly over to Australia? Is this meeting with Brian going to be private or public, and will Mark STILL be speaking, but just not at the Hillsong Conference?

Seeing how some churches are responding to Mark Driscoll, and knowing how Houston operates, it would not surprise us at all if Brian Houston does invite Driscoll to speak at Hillsong Church prior to the Hillsong Conference. After all, Driscoll is still meeting with Houston and “will be able to speak in person in the coming weeks to discuss some of the issues that have been raised”.

[…] what – if anything – he has learned, […]

Did Mark Driscoll learn to repent of his sins? Did Mark Driscoll learn that because of the type of sins he’s committed that he’s no longer Biblically qualified to be a Pastor? You’re referring to those right Brian? …Right?

[…] and for me to understand better how he is progressing in both his personal and professional life.

Hold it! Didn’t you already say you had a personal interaction with him on the phone in the very first sentence?

Didn’t you already ask him these questions? Isn’t that the reason why you told Mark he isn’t speaking at the Hillsong Conference? Because he hasn’t actually progressed in his personal and professional life?

If Mark didn’t give a satisfactory answer then all you needed to do, is type in the name “Mark Driscoll” in a google search engine to read the variety of  charges people have made against him, such as stealing church money to buy his way onto the New York Times best seller’s list, or how fourteen pages of his book contained plagiarized material, etc. There is PLENTY of evidence for the illegal activity he’s engaged in… Just google it, seriously.

The teachings of Christ are based on love and forgiveness […]

Yes this is true.

But unfortunately Brian Houston is notorious for preaching (and believing) a love that excluees integrity, responsibility, accountability, repentance and honesty. Not only that, Houston’s false Jesus preaches an anti-biblical, worldly love that is separated of what God’s Law and Gospel defines as love.

He is also notorious for clearly rejecting the biblical criteria of what the qualifications are for a pastor and how a pastor should function and behave. The reason why he teaches falsely on love, forgiveness and what it means to be a pastor is because if he taught biblically, people would see that he is biblically disqualified to lead and operates illegally in the Assemblies of God.

Just like Driscoll, Houston’s idea of forgiveness completely ignores repentance and dismisses any form of being accountable for one’s sins. The reason for this is because Houston (just like his father) does not know what Christianity is nor it’s central message. (See CWC & HillsongCW Archives.)

[…] and I will not write off Mark as a person […]

That’s funny, you and Mark have both written off Jesus as God by ignoring what He says.

His word is clear that you and Mark Driscoll are not fit to pastor anyone. Especially you Brian. Your track record is a blight on Christianity and the fact you persist in your own false presumptions is causing others to stumble.

Christ offers forgiveness as we repent and turn from sins. All that is required is we turn from wickedness, take responsibility for sinful behavior and right wrongs – and forgiveness is freely given.

“But when [John the Baptist] saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming for baptism, he said to them, “You brood of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Therefore bear fruit in keeping with repentance…” Matthew 3:7-8

NOTE: the truth is this. No one wants to write off Mark Driscoll [or Brian Houston]. As Christians we are to call leaders out who do sin publicly and bring them under church discipline when they refuse to repent of their sins.

[…] simply because of the things that people have said about him […]

The things people have said on Mark Driscoll are TRUE. Here again, Brian Houston is attempting to discredit credible sources.

You know something is wrong with Driscoll when he is invited to speak at Hillsong Conference…

[…] a small minority of people signing a petition […]

NOTE: Brian Houston’s standard for a long time has been ‘might is right’.

Here we see Brian Houston implying that the “majority” knows better. But as with many issues before, Brian Houston “lies” by omission and keeps the majority in ignorance.

The only reason why he is dropping Mark Driscoll from speaking at Hillsong is because the minority started to greatly influence the majority (see further down). So what is Brian Houston doing?

Since he likes to lead the majority based on popularity, to retain power he must undermine the credibility of the minority and encourage people to throw disdain at them by appealing to the majority. We have seen him do this before regarding his Allah comments.

“Pull the Allah one, Brian” (Part 2)

NOTE: Notice that these are mainly CHRISTIANS he is encouraging people to hate.

BRIAN HOUSTON’S LIES

Lying by omission is when someone leaves out key information so they come across as “honest”, leaving you with a false impression or idea on the subject at hand. This overall statement released by Brian Houston seems to be in this category. This is because he has bought up the petition in his statement. Click the link below to read the petition:

Christian’s petitioning for Hillsong to remove the disgraced Mark Driscoll from their Conferences

As you can see, the petition towards the beginning listed a number of offences made by Mark Driscoll. One thing that did not make that list was Mark Driscoll’s crass language, but this was talked about in a paragraph after the list. The key phrase in this petition we want to draw your attention to is this:

“Although the statements are 14 years old, his more recent messages about “feminised men” and women’s roles being solely within the home suggest his views have not changed, although his language may have.”

It becomes apparent that Houston did not consider Mark’s other offenses to be as bad as this more minor offense. Houston summarised the petition like this:

“The teachings of Christ are based on love and forgiveness, and I will not write off Mark as a person simply because of the things that people have said about him, a small minority of people signing a petition or statements he has made many years ago for which he has since repeatedly apologised.” [Emphasis ours]

See what’s wrong here?

1. Brian Houston is capitalizing on the information and lying to them about what the actual petition was trying to address.
2. He is completely out of line for taking half a sentence out of the petition and then distorting the writer’s overall concerns
3. Which in turn he then portrays her, and the people who signed, as unforgiving, unloving, hyper-skeptics.
4. He ignores the six points in his statement and only focuses on Driscoll’s language. (Lying by omission.)
5. He attempts to portray himself as being the forgiving one while smearing the “minority” as being unforgiving in spite of the petition saying, “We fully believe that people can be restored and redeemed and that forgiveness is a fundamental part of Jesus’ teaching” and goes on to explaining how Driscoll can receive forgiveness.

His statement completely fabricates the overall petition when one actually reads what it says and lists the other more numerous charges.

Brian Houston Lying By Ommission

Don’t you think Brian Houston should be publicly exposed for these false statements and be subject to biblical discipline as well? (But then again, the way Brian Houston reads the petition and spoke about it is the same way he treats the Christian scriptures. So why should this behaviour surprise us?)

We would like to point out to readers that this is not the first time Brian Houston has been caught lying and behaving immoral in his statements:

“Tabloid trash” exposing Hillsong of lying?
“Pull the Allah one, Brian” (Part 1)
“Pull the Allah one, Brian” (Part 2)

[…] or statements he has made many years ago […]

We will be writing more about this statement in another article – but notice what Brian Houston is doing. He is distancing the issue as though Mark Driscoll’s behavior was not recent, thus not relevant anymore and that “haters [are] gonna hate” for the sake of hating. And this is just defamatory and deceitful.

Furthermore, the real issue was not “simply” statements made many years ago, but rather, Driscoll’s issues of systemic abuse, bullying, misuse of funds, inappropriate language, plagiarizing, unethical behavior and refusing to submit to elders’ discipline. This is a very public and recent case. Brian Houston is deliberately playing down Driscoll’s pulpit “crimes”.

[…] for which he has since repeatedly apologized.

More word games. Christians are calling Mark Driscoll to repent. Some churches, their leaders, and Brian Houston, keep switching the words of Mark’s critics, insisting he has “apologized”. But these are two different things.

We are told that Driscoll has apologized and “repeatedly apologized”. But the Christian teaching on repentance doesn’t just stop at an apology. To think everything is solved at an apology is not what Christians are asking for. Christians are calling for repentance. These men keep diverting the issue by painting other Christians as unforgiving and hateful and portraying Mark Driscoll as the victim, giving the false impression that Mark Driscoll has dealt with his issues.

There are PLENTY of issues Mark Driscoll has YET to repent of, such as saying he will run over people who don’t follow his vision with the Mars Hill bus. Mark Driscoll has NOT repented for misusing church funds nor for buying his way onto the New York Times Best Seller’s List using tithe money. Not to mention that Mark Driscoll has NOT repented for plagiarizing material in “his books” (which he hired ghost writers to do for him anyway.) There are countless victims who have been hurt, lied to, and manipulated by Mark Driscoll, and he has YET to apologize to these individuals. For Brian Houston to overlook these facts and endorse an unrepentant man is totally unloving and a complete affront to Jesus and his teachings of repentance and the forgiveness of sins.

It’s a good thing that finally more and more Christians are seeing through this particular lie that false teachers are peddling.

However, I do not want unnecessary distractions during our conference, […]

Brian Houston has many false teachers regularly speaking at Hillsong Conferences. Mark Driscoll was just a “blip on the screen” compared to the numerous false teachers invited to speak at this yearly event that supposedly exists to glorify Jesus.

[…] particularly as this 30 minute interview was only a small part of this five day event […]

Now Brian Houston is trying to reduce the issue – so it looks as though people are making a mountain out of a molehill because it’s only a “30 minute interview”. But Brian can’t have it both ways.

In his previous statement Brian Houston acknowledged that he was exalting the issue Mark Driscoll a serious “platform” at Hillsong Conference:

“So why am I using our platform to interview Mark? […] I genuinely want to know! Did he really say those things?” [Source]

Hillsong-ImportantOrNot

[…] It was clear to me that Mark’s attendance had the potential to divert attention from the real purpose of Hillsong Conference, […]

This is ludicrous. According to Houston’s last statement, Houston WANTED to “divert attention from the real purpose of Hillsong Conference” because Houston genuinely wanted to know if Mark Driscoll did “really say those things.” Was Houston planning to get a list of all of Driscoll’s potty-mouthed words and phrases and ask him if he said those things? It sounded as though in his previous statement the answer was going to be “yes,” he was going to do something along those lines.

[…] which is to see people leave encouraged in their own spiritual journey [the cause].

… Because Christianity is ALL about people’s “own spiritual journey.”

…

No Brian. That’s called paganism. New Age.

People are to be encouraged and fed God’s Word and leave inspired by the finished work of Jesus Christ. We know that Brian Houston is usually very “politically correct”. So why is Brian Houston paving the way for spiritual correctness?

Clearly Mark has held some views and made some statements that cannot be defended.

So Brian is aware of what statements exactly? He is deliberately holding back what he knows so that he keeps people in the dark. And still, Houston seems to convey that he doesn’t believe the statements in the media and internet.

NOTE: Brian is still reducing issues to statements.

One or two of the more outrageous things he is purported to have said, […]

(Which can be seen on video readily.)

[…] I have heard for the first time through the media exposure over the past week.

But you don’t listen to the media, do you Brian? You teach your own members not to listen to the media. That’s the devil isn’t it? Bad press against your idea of Christianity is of Satan but good press against your idea of Christianity is of God.

Once again, Brian Houston’s double standard over the media is pitiful.

NOTE: Brian Houston confesses he has not done his homework on Driscoll before inviting Mark Driscoll to speak at Hillsong. We will be exploring this issue in another article.

Reviewing Houston’s first statement on Driscoll: Did Driscoll mislead Brian Houston?

‘Below you can read a very interesting media statement about Mark Driscoll that Brian Houston released last week (we can confirm it was released as early as last Friday (05/06/2015).

Brian and Driscoll interview mislead

You can read the statement below. In this review, we will carefully analyse what Houston said.

REVIEW OF HOUSTON’S FIRST STATEMENT RE: MARK DRISCOLL

Let me be clear about one thing.

NOTE: He said it – he will be clear on ONE THING (which isn’t true anyway). After this “one thing”, he will not be appealing to honesty but will be presenting a very fallacious presentation on Mark Driscoll speaking at Hillsong.

Mark Driscoll and I stand poles apart on women, their place in society, and their role in the Church.

Really? Hillsong is notorious for their disingenuous treatment of women through the teachings of Mr Houston’s wife, Bobbie Houston. While Mr Houston may not use crass language, his wife does a good job encouraging women to be sex objects through insensitive language and soft control methods.

Her “teaching” even  offended non-Christians. Bobbie stated,

w_bhouston“If I carry weight I feel like a retard … How are you going to do anything to surprise your man when you need a hydraulic crane just to turn over in bed?” Have plastic surgery, if it makes you feel better and it is for the right reasons, and “girls, pelvic floor exercises – can you believe I am saying this? – you know, I have heard that orgasm is not as strong if you are really sloppy in that area… When you are doing what is correct in God there is a protection over your life. Like – hello! – it is just there. So it is a very powerful thing. Amen. Yeah, fully.””. [Source]

Hillsong Church has a long history of involving women in every area of church life both on and off the platform, and my own wife Bobbie is my co-Senior Pastor.

NOTE: Brian is aware how Driscoll treats women in ministry.

In saying this, Brian Houston has thrown out the bible over what God says DIRECTLY about women in ministry and official church offices. The fact Brian Houston is loud and proud over his apostasy demonstrates he is an unqualified pastor (like Driscoll) yet again. It works against the very core of Jesus’ Church, Jesus’ message and the Spirit of God (Ephesians 5).

I think our leadership styles and relationship with staff and key people have also been vastly different.

NOTE: So Brian is aware of Driscoll’s leadership style, enough to distance himself from it, vastly.

So why am I using our platform to interview Mark?

Because he is a celebrity pastor (well known) and will attract interest?

NOTE! Brian understands he is giving Mark a very significant platform and also knows there is enough contention with Mark already to downgrade his visit from preaching.

We come from different backgrounds, theological positions, and church expressions.

If Brian is noting these differences, did Brian do some research into one of the most well known, controversial mega church pastors, especially over the last 18+ months, to check his suitability? Does he know that Mark Driscoll is most infamous for his “cussing” and his sex-related sermons.

I genuinely want to know! Did he really say those things?

For someone who is glued to the internet, how can Brian Houston miss all the videos, reputable media outlets and internet discernment sites?

NOTE: By saying this, he is downplaying EVERY other reliable source and elevating his authority to judge. That’s all right world! Brian’s sorting it out here!

NOTE 2: Brian Houston is intentional with this fallacious presentation. He is not appealing to truth and clarity now but appealing to sinful curiosity (curio-fallacy). A Christian Conference should be set up to glorify Christ and not have its standard lowered to that of a celebrity gossip rag. Thus Houston was advertising Driscoll with these silly tabloid-like questions to arouse curious minds.

Does he believe those things?

Why would he say them if he didn’t Brian?

Does he have any regrets?

Sure does – he’s just lost the top job at Mars Hill in such a public manner due to his abusive, inappropriate and unethical behavior.

Has he been misrepresented?

Much evidence has been cited. Acst29 said Mark confirmed the accusations, and his own church elders also had Mark under discipline. It was not a one off event of some inappropriate statements.

What has he learned and what can we all learn?

So Mark will be teaching or offering advice?

And where to from here?

Here we are seeing that not only is Houston appealing to sinful curiosity, he is placarding how he and his movement are daring and “dangerous” – a theme he has been encouraging his movement to get behind through this year’s vision and his sermons (See ‘A Dangerous Declaration‘). He is still evoking his church’s ideology from last year to “pioneer into the unknown” (See ‘A Pioneer Spirit‘).

So “where to from here”? Houston is deliberately trying to drum up the image of mystery and summon the idea that what he is doing is “cutting edge”.

But why was Brian asking Driscoll to speak/teach in the first place? Why not simply have a personal discussion with Mark over the phone if he genuinely wanted the know?

What we are seeing is Brian deflecting responsibility, undermining the issue and offering a distraction.

I have met Mark just twice. Before his very public resignation from Mars Hill Church…

ie. During those tumultuous months of contention with Mark’s behaviour (eg. anonymous people – 12/9/2013 article revealing Janet Mettford exposing Driscoll’s plagiarism).

… A mutual friend introduced us over a cup of coffee in Seattle. We talked about life, ministry, and his previous exposure to Australia.

So amongst all these scandals going on, Brian Houston had a coffee with Mark and talked “about life, ministry, and his previous exposure to Australia”. Did you get that?

Ministry.

But for some reason, Brian got the impression and idea that Mark Driscoll was ideal to speak at Hillsong Conference.

So our question is this:

At that meeting (before his resignation), did Mark Driscoll mislead Brian Houston over his current situation in Mars Hill?

Mark Driscoll mislead Brian Houston

The second time, I was standing in line at Starbucks in California bleary eyed and jet lagged when another customer in the line said hi. It was Mark Driscoll and his daughter.

If you re-read this a few times, it is evident that Brian Houston was very careful how he worded this sentence. Houston is suggesting that he was too tired to talk with Driscoll in Starbucks over a coffee. Really? (We’re talking about Brian Houston the opportunist here.)

A lot has been said. There’s lessons to be learned.

This is Brian Houston using distraction and playing the classic downplay fallacy.

I’m looking forward to asking the questions and hearing from Mark directly.

This implies the less “direct” information is dubious and therefore is undermining the evidence available and the people making the case against Driscoll.

Will we agree afterwards or agree to disagree?

And here we see Brian Houston’s true nature emerging from under his sheep-skin clothes. Is the truth and biblical instruction important to Brian Houston or not?

Mark Driscoll’s poor behaviour as a pastor is not a simple difference of opinion. This is an issue of what God has clearly stated what needs to be done with those who disqualify themselves from ministry.

Time will tell.

Houston fallaciously appeals to time as the answer to this apparently puzzling issue.

I doubt we will agree on everything,

And who will be the one that gets trashed in this ‘upcoming’ conversation? God and His Word. This is not about Brian or Mark agreeing or disagreeing. This is about both of them submitting to God’s Word, which neither are doing in the first place.

but everyone deserves an opportunity to be heard.

Now Brian is generalising again in a form of downplay fallacy. Qualified ministers deserve to be heard since that is their duty. Not everyone deserves to have their story, opinion or teachings aired. We are not called to mess with God’s teachings.

Furthermore, Mark has already had opportunities to tell his story publicly, that is, be heard. It is Mark’s victims who don’t get their “deserved opportunity to be heard”. (They are not celebrity pastors.)

Mark will not be speaking at the conference. It’s an open interview with Mark and his wife Grace. Let’s see what he has to say.

So “everyone deserves an opportunity to be heard” on Hillsong’s Conference “platform” except now “Mark will not be speaking at the conference“? Did you realise what you just said Brian Houston?

Blessings,

Brian

Since when has church discipline and a pastor’s credentials been the subject of an Oprah-like discussion? And, what if, for a variety of reasons, unintentionally or not, Mark unfairly represents what happened? Those elders and others who called Mark to account will effectively be painted badly. So why risk turning Hillsong Conference into a Kangaroo Court? (With Brian at the helm and victims without a voice.)

ORIGINAL ARTICLE

Personal statement from Pastor Brian Houston – Re: Mark Driscoll’s View Not Like Hillsong

June 2015

Let me be clear about one thing. Mark Driscoll and I stand poles apart on women, their place in society, and their role in the Church.

Hillsong Church has a long history of involving women in every area of church life both on and off the platform, and my own wife Bobbie is my co-Senior Pastor.

I think our leadership styles and relationship with staff and key people have also been vastly different.

So why am I using our platform to interview Mark? We come from different backgrounds, theological positions, and church expressions.  I genuinely want to know! Did he really say those things? Does he believe those things?  Does he have any regrets? Has he been misrepresented? What has he learned and what can we all learn? And where to from here?

I have met Mark just twice. Before his very public resignation from Mars Hill Church, a mutual friend introduced us over a cup of coffee in Seattle. We talked about life, ministry, and his previous exposure to Australia. The second time, I was standing in line at Starbucks in California bleary eyed and jet lagged when another customer in the line said hi. It was Mark Driscoll and his daughter.

A lot has been said. There’s lessons to be learned. I’m looking forward to asking the questions and hearing from Mark directly. Will we agree afterwards or agree to disagree? Time will tell. I doubt we will agree on everything, but everyone deserves an opportunity to be heard.

Mark will not be speaking at the conference. It’s an open interview with Mark and his wife Grace. Let’s see what he has to say.

Blessings,
Brian

If there is anything Brian Houston of Hillsong hates, it is anyone who criticises him. If they are Christians, they are “Pharisees” and “evil people”. If it’s the media, it’s demonic, anti-Christian and not of God. Again, Brian Houston espouses to his followers that people should not listen or engage with “critics”. According to Houston, these “haters” are out to stunt your potential and growth.

This series of articles will observe how Brian Houston went against his own teachings and decided to act according to the public criticism over Mark Driscoll the last week.

Houston bends knee to critics and media (Part 1): Lateline
Houston bends knee to critics and media (Part 2): Sunrise Interview

We will hopefully get time to analyse this statement in full over the coming months.

Hillsong writes,

Statement from Pastor Brian Houston, Hillsong Church

June 2015

After personal interaction with Mark Driscoll today, we have agreed that he will no longer be coming to Australia or the UK to attend Hillsong Conference. It is my hope that Mark and I will be able to speak in person in the coming weeks to discuss some of the issues that have been raised, what – if anything – he has learned, and for me to understand better how he is progressing in both his personal and professional life.

The teachings of Christ are based on love and forgiveness, and I will not write off Mark as a person simply because of the things that people have said about him, a small minority of people signing a petition or statements he has made many years ago for which he has since repeatedly apologised.

However, I do not want unnecessary distractions during our conference, particularly as this 30 minute interview was only a small part of this five day event. It was clear to me that Mark’s attendance had the potential to divert attention from the real purpose of Hillsong Conference, which is to see people leave encouraged in their own spiritual journey.

Clearly Mark has held some views and made some statements that cannot be defended. One or two of the more outrageous things he is purported to have said, I have heard for the first time through the media exposure over the past week.

LOVE, LEAD, LIE

We noted in our previous article Brian Houston retweeting Hillsong’s tweet of their ‘Hillsong Statement’ about the A Current Affairs (ACA) report. This is what the Hillsong Tweet read:

Statement by Hillsong Church on A Current Affair story: http://hil.so/qzpw
Source: Hillsong Church, https://twitter.com/hillsong/status/590754683674853376, 10:51 PM – 21 Apr 2015. (Accessed 24/04/2015.)

We have already reviewed this “Official Statement” from Hillsong:

Which “tabloid trash” do you believe?
Brian Houston in damage control… again… and again…and again.

What occurred after Hillsong issued that statement was breathtaking.

THE REPORTER AND THE RORTER

One of the issues that the A Current Affairs report highlighted was the fact that Hillsong pressures people to give money.

Hillsong have continually lied to the general public about this issue and this is a lie that we at Church Watch have exposed repeatedly.

We would like to remind our readers that Brian Houston himself pressures his members to give money so they can be right before God and be in the will of God. (This false teaching absolutely perverts the foundational teachings of Christianity and is in fact a damnable heresy.) As you can see, Houston is scamming people financially into believing that they can only prosper in God if they give money to God/Hillsong.

On the 22nd of April, Tracy Grimshaw from A Current Affair tweeted ,

@FArimado we ask Hillsong constantly to talk to us about how the donations are spent. They will not. “If only” they would..
Source: Tracy Grimshaw, Twitter, https://twitter.com/tracygrimshaw/status/590997174332227584, 2:54 PM – 22 Apr 2015. (Accessed 25/04/2015.)

It was this phrase from Brian Houston that caught our attention:

“It’s not as though ACA is known for its credibility”.

Who is lying?  Who’s credibility is at stake here? Sadly, many people are tweeting that this is not a good look for a church. And as @Dan_Nolan9 observed, “Not a good look for a church – creating falsehoods in a statement accusing ACA of falsehoods”.

This because ACA responded to Hillsong’s original tweet alerting people to the Hillsong Statement. The statement claimed “the program made no attempt to contact us to get the facts – or even hear our perspective – before airing this piece of fiction”.

Ben McCormack from ACA tweeted a few times to people who accused ACA of not contacting Hillsong.

@hillsong this statement by Hillsong is false. ACA contacted the church by phone and email and we got no response.

This tweet included the following evidence to prove that Hillsong’s statement was a farce:

prood_TwitterACAExposesHillsonLie2_24-04-2015 prood_TwitterACAExposesHillsonLie1_24-04-2015

He also tweeted later with the same attachments,

@Markedw @tracygrimshaw @hillsong we contacted them on 4 separate occasions. Don’t fall for more Hillsong dishonesty.
Source: Ben McCormack, Twitter, https://twitter.com/BenMcCormack9/status/591105999525650432, 10:07 PM – 22 Apr 2015. (Accessed 25/04/2015.)

After the news team publicly exposed Hillsong for not being honest in their official Hillsong Statement, Brian Houston contacted Ben McCormack. Do you think Brian Houston apologised for his false allegation?

This exchange took place on the 23rd of April, 2015:

Brian Houston:
@benmccormack9 Hey.. How about coming to have a coffee with me one day? You got the guts to do that? Just you and me.

Ben McCormack:
@BrianCHouston love to meet. Why not do an interview on camera & answer some questions too? You got the guts to do that?

Brian Houston:
@BenMcCormack9 The Q’s are not the issue. It’s your skewered editing & underhanded tactics that are the problem. So no..!

Ben McCormack:
@BrianCHouston now there’s a surprise.

Ben McCormack:
@BrianCHouston our offer of an interview remains open..

Brian Houston:
@BenMcCormack9 well my offer of a coffee with no hidden recording or cameras stands. It’s not as though ACA is known for its credibility!!

Ben McCormack:
@BrianCHouston we live to give Brian.. Just like your followers.

proof_TwitterHoustosteroneChallenged_25-04-2015

You’d think that excellent leadership could check all their emails or even check with ACA, before publicly accusing ACA of lying. (Especially when the program was being advertised in advance.) Once again, we are seeing another unsound, unwise and poor leadership example in Hillsong Church.

So why should Bobbie and Brian Houston set themselves up as leadership mentors for other churches to follow?

(EDIT 29/04/2015: We have uploaded another Hillsong document which is a tithing envelope titled:

HOME
building God’s House
Tithes

It comes with an out of context scripture from Malachi 3:10 [NKJV]. It is in this context where Malachi curses anyone who withholds their tithe to “God’s House” or “storehouse”. You can see this Hillsong tithing envelope at the bottom of this article.)

Hillsong released a statement in response to this A Current Affair report:

Hillsong: The multi-million dollar “crazy cult”

Not only did Hillsong issue to Senator Nick Xenophon mob-like threats, apparently “the vast majority of Australians” see the ‘A Current Affair’ report as “nothing more than tabloid trash.” So in response to the minority in Hillsong who read and believe “tabloid trash,” Hillsong writes:

Statement by Hillsong Church on A Current Affair story April 21, 2015

There was no factual basis whatsoever to the story on A Current Affair about Hillsong Church, and the program made no attempt to contact us to get the facts – or even hear our perspective – before airing this piece of fiction. The movie “Let Hope Rise” is being produced by an outside production company who approached us, and Hillsong Church has not invested one cent into this movie. Furthermore, we operate like any other church financially and support people pastorally across the world. This story was yet again, nothing more than tabloid trash and we believe the vast majority of Australians view it as such. It is disappointing that Senator Nick Xenophon, (who presents himself as a champion of the people) has cooperated with such stories for at least the third time. It is poor behaviour and worth noting by church-going voters and people at large in South Australia, who rightly expect their elected representatives to make comments based on factual information rather than conjecture.

There is a lot to extract from this statement. Especially the plethora of fallacious arguments and lack of evidence to back up Hillsong’s claims. However, more people seem to be sharing their experiences or insights into the corruption of the Hillsong cult.

This an insightful comment from a former AOG pastors wife:

My mate Tanya Levin did a brilliant job on ACA this week. She’s speaking again about the revenue raising juggernaut that is Hillsong ahead of the release the mega-church’s new Hollywood movie.

In my former life I was for a time an AoG (ACC) pastor’s wife. Even 25 years ago, Brian Houston was recognised in the movement as the one to watch. I can tell you that pastors of churches all around Australia dreamed of being able to count on collections like the ones Brian garnered. Over time Brian’s formula for getting folks to empty their pockets – a complex and emotionally powerful mix of music and clever sales patter with lashings of Jesus – was replicated in hundreds of financially struggling churches around the country and, eventually, around the world. As Tanya so beautifully puts it in this clip, “From London to Cape Town to Copenhagen the message is the same – give, give, give, give, give.”

Although the ACA team was forbidden to film the plea for money, I can tell you that the section of the ‘service’ specifically designed to predispose you to giving generously, runs for about 15 minutes and is the culmination of a cleverly orchestrated, high-production value, highly emotionally manipulative stage show. Those of us in the AoG who despised Houston’s methods had a name for it: fleecing the folk. Nobody does it better than Brian. The report estimates in 2012 Hillsong ‘earned’ $72 million dollars in tax-free income, only a tiny fraction of which is spent on charity work. These guys are crooks, plain and simple, and the Australian public is paying for it. Glad to see Nick Xenophon is trying to increase public accountability of this secretive money printing organisation.

Her views are worth considering Hillsong states that they “operate like any other church financially and support people pastorally across the world.”

Really? Do you want to know why those people in the ACA Report give 20% at Hillsong?

Hillsong_GivingEnvelope2Hillsong_GivingEnvelope1

Does your church put out giving envelopes to you that are like this? Would you feel comfortable putting your credit card number on the back of the envelope where everyone can see it?

* Tithing is an anti-Christian teaching that uses Malachi 3:8-11 to teach that if you do not tithe, God will curse you.
* This envelope was collected from Hillsong and given to us at the beginning of January 2015.

Hillsong’s “What We Believe” sheepskin

Hillsong for a long time have tried to convince the Christian church that they are not a cult. Since Hillsong is under more scrutiny with their stance on social issues, it is of our opinion that they may start to tamper with their belief statements.

Therefore, we thought it was worth distributing their “What we believe” statement so people can see how much they don’t follow it.

Hillsong writes,

We believe that the Bible is God’s Word. It is accurate, authoritative and applicable to our everyday lives.

We believe in one eternal God who is the Creator of all things. He exists in three Persons: God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. He is totally loving [except critics] and completely holy.

We believe that sin has separated each of us from God and His purpose for our lives.

We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ as both God and man is the only One who can reconcile us to God. He lived a sinless and exemplary life, died on the cross in our place, and rose again to prove His victory and empower us for life.

We believe that in order to receive forgiveness and the ‘new birth’ we must repent of our sins, believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, and submit to His will for our lives.

We believe that in order to live the holy and fruitful lives that God intends for us, we need to be baptised in water and be filled with the power of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit enables us to use spiritual gifts, including speaking in tongues.

We believe in the power and significance of the Church [that’s Roman Catholic cult teaching] and the necessity of believers to meet regularly together for fellowship, prayer and the ‘breaking of bread’.

We believe that God has individually equipped us so that we can successfully achieve His purpose for our lives which is to worship God, fulfil our role in the Church and serve the community in which we live.

We believe that God wants to heal and transform us so that we can live healthy and blessed lives in order to help others more effectively.

We believe that our eternal destination of either Heaven or hell is determined by our response to the Lord Jesus Christ.

We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ is coming back again as He promised.

Hillsong Church is a member of the Australian Christian Churches.  A movement of almost 1100 churches and more than 250,000 believers across Australia.  For the ACC’s full constitution, history, leadership and statement of belief, please visit: www.acc.org.au

Brian Houston, buzzfeed, clarification, gay marriage, Hillsong, Hillsong Church, houston, marriage equality, statement

In this article, one commentor stated, “This was just as ambiguous as the statement that was supposedly out of context.” There is a good chance he was referring to the deceitful “clarification” made by Brian Houston on his Allah statement earlier this year.

It’s good to know that Hillsong supporters and members are grumbling with the dishonesty of Brian Houston.

The BuzzFeed reports,

Hillsong Megachurch Denies Supporting Marriage Equality

It rebukes international reporting, “Nowhere did I suggest that Hillsong supported gay marriage.”

Australian evangelical church Hillsong has moved to clarify its position on marriage equality after being lavished with praise in a recent New York Times report.

The New York Times reported that Hillsong co-founder Brian Houston was in an “ongoing conversation” about marriage equality which represented a “shift in tone” for Christian evangelical churches.

The response to NYT report came via a statement to the church’s website.

“Nowhere in my answer did I diminish biblical truth or suggest that I or Hillsong Church supported gay marriage. My personal view on the subject of homosexuality would line up with most traditionally held Christian views,” wrote Mr Houston.

The pastor said he was not publically “condemning” homosexuality because the church had campuses in New York and California, where there is marriage equality.

“I made the point that public statements condemning people will place a barrier between the church and the world… which is why at Hillsong, we don’t want to reduce the real issues in people’s lives to a sound bite.”

The powerful Pentecostal church counts upwards of 100,000 people attending its weekly services worldwide and has become known globally for producing best-selling Christian rock albums.

Mr Houston’s statement sparked some criticism from Hillsong’s hundreds of thousands of followers on Facebook, who were concerned the church’s position on marriage seems vague.

The comments come after a turbulent month for Mr Houston. The pastor told the Royal Commission into child sexual abuse that he did not report several acts of abuse committed against children by his late father and Hillsong founder Frank Houston.
